If you’re getting ready for your first tennis lesson, you really don’t need much. In fact, I think it’s better to keep things simple.
Here is my short list—especially for those of us playing tennis in Florida:
- Tennis shoes. Not just general athletic shoes, running shoes, or walking shoes. Choose shoes made specifically for tennis. I learned this one the hard way! Read more here.
- A racquet. If you don’t have one yet, you’re welcome to borrow one of mine until you have a better idea of what kind of racquet works best for you. There’s no need to rush out and make a big purchase before your first lesson.
- Comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move. No need to drop several hundred dollars on the perfect tennis outfit before you’ve even stepped onto the court! Wear something comfortable that lets you move freely.
- A hat or visor. The Florida sun can be intense, so a little extra protection for your face can make a big difference.
- Sunscreen. Speaking of that Florida sun—don’t forget it!
- Water—and probably more than you think you’ll need. Hydration is particularly important when you’re playing outdoors in Florida. On especially hot days, you may also like to bring an electrolyte drink or add an electrolyte tablet or powder to your water. I personally like Nuun in Strawberry Lemonade.
- A towel. Again, particularly in the Florida heat, you’ll probably be glad you brought one.
Last but not least: Bring your curiosity and permission to be a beginner!
Come ready to learn, laugh a little, and give yourself permission not to be good at something yet.
That’s more than enough for your first day on the court.
